d-7 Roofing Recycles Asphalt Shingles

Owens Corning Preferred Contractor - Shingle Recycling Pledge - d-7 Roofing

Asphalt Shingle Recycling

A key tenet of sustainability is product durability. Owens Corning originally developed and commercialized the fiberglass-reinforced asphalt shingle, a product that lasts longer than shingles made with an organic substrate. While this innovative energy-saving product  has reduced waste by extending the product life-cycle, the problem of roofing tear-off waste persists. As eight out of ten homes in the U.S.  have asphalt shingle roofs, millions of tons of waste are now sent to landfills every year as homes are re-roofed.

In response, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC became the first manufacturer to set up a process to connect contractors with convenient recycling facilities through a national strategic alliance. Based on a pilot conducted in Indiana, U.S., Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC has begun rolling out the program across the United States, starting in the Midwest. As part of this groundbreaking program, contractors take the Preferred Contractor Shingle Recycling Pledge, committing to recycle their shingle tear-offs.

Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC is working with Heritage Environmental Services — the largest privately held environmental services company in the United States — to offer dedicated, convenient drop-off centers that will collect the shingle tear-offs for further processing and recycle into paving or other uses.
